China approves the world’s biggest dam on the Brahmaputra River, close to the Indian border.

China has given the green light to build the world’s largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet, close to the Indian border.

The project is expected to cost around $137 billion and is included in the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan. This has caused worry in nearby countries, particularly India and Bangladesh.

The dam will be constructed in a narrow valley where the river takes a sharp turn before entering Arunachal Pradesh and Bangladesh. The total spending on the project could go over one trillion yuan, making it much bigger than China’s Three Gorges Dam.

India is concerned that the dam could let China control the river’s water flow and possibly flood border regions during disputes. In response, India is also planning to build a dam on the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh.
