On April 25, 2023, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized peace ideas for Ukraine proposed by Donald Trump’s team, according to TASS.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s team is thinking about postponing Ukraine’s NATO membership for 20 years. In return, the West would provide military aid, and European peacekeepers would monitor a ceasefire.
Lavrov rejected this plan, saying it was an effort to “freeze the fighting” and push the responsibility onto Europe. He mentioned that Russia hasn’t received any official message from Washington about these ideas and stressed that U.S. policy is still under President Biden’s control until Trump takes office on January 20.
Lavrov said Russia is ready to talk with the new U.S. government if Washington starts the conversation.
