Switzerland has officially banned the wearing of face coverings in public, including burqas.

Switzerland has enacted a ban on facial coverings in public, often called the “burqa ban,” which took effect on January 1.

Research from the University of Lucerne shows that only a small number of women in the country wear the burqa, with around 30 women wearing the niqab.

Muslims make up about 5% of Switzerland’s total population of 8.6 million. Individuals who breach this new law could face a fine of up to 1,000 Swiss francs, which is roughly $1,144.
